Girl Number Twenty

“Come here, girl.”
She blinked herself back into the moment. The schoolmaster was beckoning her forward. Her legs wobbled as she made her way to the front of the classroom.
“I can see you need a little more incentive to commit facts to memory. Something memorable in aid of memory.”
He opened the desk drawer and her eyes widened as he produced an eighteen-inch ruler. He slapped it against his palm and the noise resounded in the empty room.
Lauren stared at it, transfixed. “Sir, I . . . I’m sorry, I–”
“Quiet, girl! An apology is not the same as a lesson. When you fail at one, you don’t get to substitute the other. It seems you can’t pay attention when I try to teach you something. And girls who can’t pay attention will be punished.”
The word made her tremble. Her scalp prickled as she blushed to the roots of her hair. The embarrassment was exquisite.
Mr Gradgrind towered over her as he gestured to the desk with the ruler. “Raise your skirt and bend over.”
